Polytechnic University has received a $1.5 million grant from the New York State Office of Science and Technology (NYSTAR) to establish WICAT, the Wireless Internet Center for Advanced Technology (wicat.poly.edu). Prof. Phyllis Frankl will lead WICAT, which includes more than a dozen faculty from Polytechnic's CIS, ECE, and Management departments, as well as faculty from Columbia University. WICAT will work on many aspects of the wireless internet, including information access over infostations powered by high-bandwidth wireless networks, power-aware computing techniques for mobile devices, location aware services, and approaches for overcoming the bandwidth bottleneck in current cellular data links.
WICAT's program is based on the premise that no single "one-size fits all" solution is suitable for all wireless information services. WICAT's research will develop novel applications, protocols, and power and radio resource management techniques along with techniques for evaluating trade-offs between conflicting demands for resources. In addition to technological research, WICAT will perform research into management strategies for harnessing the capability of the wireless internet and a technology transfer program. Industrial Affiliates will have the opportunity to sponsor research projects and gain early access to research results.
