Abstract

      Peer to Peer (P2P) file sharing is currently one of the most important Internet applications, with ethical, legal, security and technical ramifications. This technology has had a major impact on the recording industry. The presentation gives current status and future trends on this emerging and growing technology.
 

Bio

      Prof. Keith Ross is the Leonard J. Shustek Professor of Computer Science and the author (with Jim Kurose) of "Computer Networking: A Top-Down Approach Featuring the Internet", the most widely adopted textbook on computer networking in the United States and internationally. Prof. Ross joined Polytechnic in 2003 after appointments at the Institut Eurecom in France and the University of Pennsylvania. He is a leading researcher in the field of computer networking who has made significant contributions in both theory and practice. Prof. Ross is also one of the developers of the CARP protocol for web caching implemented in products by Microsoft and Netscape, and a founder of Wimba, an Internet technology startup in the area of distance learning and multimedia technologies. Prof. Ross received his PhD from the University of Michigan.

      Since joining Polytechnic, Prof. Ross has started an ambitious research program in the emerging area of peer-to-peer systems, involving several faculty and a number of graduate and undergraduate students. His work is supported by several grants from federal agencies, including a $2.8 million grant from the National Science Foundation awarded in Fall 2003.
