Prof. Keith Ross, currently at the Institut Eurecom in France, will join the Department as the first holder of the Leonard J. Shustek Chair in Computer Science at Polytechnic University. Prof. Ross is a leading researcher in the field of computer networking who has made significant contributions in both theory and practice. These contributions include important work in the areas of stochastic modeling, optimization, quality of service, video streaming and video-on-demand, multi-service loss networks, web caching, content distribution networks, peer-to-peer networks, application-layer protocols, queueing theory, and Markov decision processes.
Prof. Ross is one of the developers of the CARP protocol for web caching implemented in products by Microsoft and Netscape. His book titled "Computer Networking: A Top-Down Approach Featuring the Internet", coauthored with James Kurose, is the most widely used textbook on computer networking and has been adopted by over 200 Universities. Prof. Ross received his PhD from the University of Michigan, and was a tenured Professor at the University of Pennsylvania before his current position at the Institut Eurecom in France.
Prof. Ross will officially join the Department in January of 2003. His research will be supported by the endowment from the Chair position, which was provided by Dr. Leonard J. Shustek '70 '70, a Poly graduate and Trustee. After earning a PhD from Stanford University and serving on the faculty of CMU, Dr. Shustek cofounded Nestar Systems and Network General Corporation, and he is currently a principal at VenCraft LLC, a seed-round venture capital firm.
